You Have Options

American Walk-In Tubs proudly partners with trusted finance companies to offer you affordable and competitive payment plans.

Although this variety of options may not be available for everyone, here are some other options to help with your purchase:

  • Medicare

Although Medicare does not currently cover the cost of your walk-in tub, there are other ways to make the purchase work for you.

Walk-in Tubs are available for anyone and not exclusive to Medicare beneficiaries or adults with special needs, so Medicare only provides assistance for Durable Medical Equipment (DME). A walk-in tub is not considered a DME, but a convenience rather than a medical necessity, but there may be rare situations in which Medicare does provide assistance in the form of reimbursement after the purchase if the walk-in tub is considered an absolute medical necessity. The beneficiary would need a medical diagnosis that proves their need and a written prescription that outlines the reasons for needing a walk-in tub to be covered by Medicare. There is no guarantee of Medicare’s assistance, but it is worth consulting with your doctor about the many benefits of a walk-in tub to see if it is something that he would recommend for you.

  • Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid’s assistance varies on a state-by-state basis, and even on the individual case. The good news is that Medicaid may be more likely to provide financial assistance for the purchase and installation of a walk-in tub or shower. There are varied rules governing Medicaid’s policy on the purchase of a walk-in tub or a low-threshold shower. In some states, Medicaid may support payment for “specialized medical equipment” and “environmental accessibility modifications.” Under these guidelines, Medicaid may pay the purchase price and installation costs for a walk-in tub when medically necessary to help an individual remain living in their home.

You can obtain more information about your state’s Medicaid coverage options by reviewing the following information:

Area Agency on Aging

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture

You may be able to benefit from the assistance of the USDA which works to help with the purchase of walk-in tubs for the elderly in low-income rural areas to help them to live comfortably and safely at home. Learn more here.

  • State Programs

It is possible that your state provides financial assistance programs for the elderly that can be used for home improvements such as the installation of your new walk-in tub.  You may check this list to see if your state participates: A list is available here.

  • Non-Profit Organizations

There are some non-profit community programs to help offset the cost of obtaining beneficial home improvements for the needy or elderly. One example is Rebuilding Together.

  • Are you a Veteran?

The Home Improvements Structural Alterations (HISA) program doesn’t cover assistance for a spa, hot tub, or Jacuzzi. However, veterans with service-connected disabilities or veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive assistance for any home improvement necessary for the continuation of treatment or for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. For more information, contact a Veteran Affairs representative or visit HISA.

  • Tax Deductibility

Since medical expenses can be tax deductible, you may talk to your accountant for details on how to claim this deduction. If you are caring for an elderly parent or handicapped person in your home, you may be able to claim the expense under the Dependent Care Tax Credit.
